Posts getting lost on the CRS Forum

I had to pull my latest CRS Forum post out Chrome's buffer because it got deleted (somehow) after I posted the thread.

I re-posted that message and it seems to be holding for now.

Last week I posted a thread on Osteoporosis -- and that thread also got deleted somehow. I did not bother re-posting that thread.

Not sure what's going on?

I did screen capture my deleted post from earlier today as proof:

KHAsmi, your thread on Stephen Hawking is presently visible, but I cannot see the thread I initiated on Honey and menaquinones, which appears on the screen snapshot you took in teh general health section.

That's pretty weird!

His screenshot shows the post timestamped 7:59 AM but the post that is visible now is timestamped several hours later suggesting he did as claimed repost it.

As I said in OP, the disappeared "Stephen Hawking" thread was still in my browser's buffer from the morning. So I simply clicked "Post" -- FWIW, it seems to be holding.

Saul: The Lists had/have huge problems, too. Older content got lost/corrupted. And, I think, the legacy Archives are still unsearchable.

Yes, on the Lab Diet 5045 ;)

Hi KH,

Relative newcomer and tip of the hat to you for all your contributions to the forum over many years...

Regarding your exchange with Saul on the monkey biscuits, I wonder, did you happen to notice Dean’s thread regarding your old biscuit regiment here:

https://www.crsociety.org/topic/11498-human-chow-cr-friendly-meal-replacements/ ?

Though it looks like you switched

to 5045

[ Details here: http://www.labdiet.com/cs/groups/lolweb/@labdiet/documents/web_content/mdrf/mdi4/~edisp/ducm04_028403.pdf ]

From 5037/8 mentioned by Dean, they both appear fairly processed and still high in protein....

I am wondering your thoughts esp. from the first two paragraphs of Dean’s post,...

The monkey trials may well have diverged in part due to differences in diet, have you considered sourcing more whole foods based approach and/or formulation with lower protein, and if not, how did you choose this one, as it appears to differ from that used in both trials?

Please see:

Well, I lost several posts, replies to the Hawking thread, and the honey thread, new threads I made about colonoscopy, about gender lifespan and so on, all disappeared. I'm not going to repost them - not enough time, and the disappearing act discourages participation.

My recent post the disappeared "cryonics" thread was a quoted reply to one of your posts in that thread.

It's a bit mysterious that these vanishings occur randomly and so often, given modern backup and RAID systems.

Methinks deliberate hacks. I hope the back-end Admin is secure!

Hi Kashimi!

The Forums are awful. The List was good -- nice, linear material -- you can skip whatever you don't want.

I disagree. It was a big mistake not having forums much sooner.

Matt: A bit before your time, perhaps, but for a while (2000-2002???), there was an official CRS Forum on the old Yahoo Message Boards. If anyone can still find that Board (may be under Yahoo Community???), you go to the head of the class.

Hi Khurram,

Thanks for the information and screenshots. The forum system logs all moderation activity so I'm hoping to find when/where things got deleted. The "General Health and Longevity" forum was setup with slightly different parameters including 'guest' topics/replies.

The normal deletions are spam/robo-postings almost solely on the forum, "General Health and Longevity". We do get spammers that register and try to spam (some outfits/people can automate the registration system and use previously harvested free email addresses from gmail, yahoo and others).

When deleting topics (new threads), there are three criteria I normally check

1) "guest" - not a registered user whether old/new

2) "0 views" / "0 replies" [a dead topic]

3) some type of spammy subject - "Free galleries"

A topic you posted on either Stephen Hawking or Osteoporosis would not meet any of these criteria.

Also, there is strong ideologically or practically-based opposition to topical or position-based censorship. This is why 'Chit Chat' and the "General Health" and the "Members Only" (must login to view as well as post) forums exist.

As triage, I'm going to disable the *guest* posting of new topics on "General Health" - it's a pain in the butt regardless with literally a 1000:1/bad:good ratio (spam:marginally_worthwhile). My immediate suspicion is that maybe the system is glitching when dozens of junk topics get deleted (or my brain or another moderator's brain is glitching).

I'll post more after looking through the logs.

To follow up, I can confirm these deletions of topics:

Deleted moderator or task-initiated Deleted a topic CR Science & Theory IF has more impact on IGF-1 than CR

Topic ID: 15991 19 March 2018 - 02:07 PM

Deleted moderator or task-initiated Deleted a topic General Health and Longevity Osteoporosis: An Avoidable Crisis (Sci Am, March 2018)

Topic ID: 16034 19 March 2018 - 02:07 PM

What I do know:

1) concurrent with these deletions (2:07 PM) are A LOT of junk posts - so it looks to be accidental (e.g., if someone with a new registration tried to post, that first post requires approval and it puts that topic on a list topics needing moderation)

2) the 'Topic ID' appear out of sequence - but close - with the junk/spam topics (all deleted 2:07 PM)

3) many of the deleted topics identify myself by log-in name, e.g.,

Tim C. Deleted topics (IDs: 16477 ) General Health and Longevity Sexy men photo blog

Topic ID: 16477 14 March 2018 - 06:45 PM

I'll fess up to the 'sexy men photo blog' deletion but I do not yet know who or what "moderator or task-initiated" is. There is a separate log explicitly named "Moderator" without activity since 2015.

4) The "Tim C." deleted post identifies my IP which is verified as my work IP (and whatismyipaddress.com). I have at least one IP address for the "moderator or task-initiated". Both IP addresses were omitted from my logs above (privacy/security reasons).

5) I haven't search or looked for help if this is a known forum bug. Likely we need to upgrade the board software before our provider would help. This will come with a new look&feel and maybe some WTF/GUI changes or features. Upgrading is a requirement to getting a bug like this chased down (if it is a bug). It does not appear to be a bug ... (this is a free-form/chronological listing of thoughts, BTW) ...

6) I have not yet been in contact with other moderators ... we'd prefer a deletion to identify the user/admin ... that said ... I did find the Hawking topic but I am omitting the user name in addition to the IP address. There are some other posts deleted but I want to find out if accidental.

Deleted topics (IDs: 16522 ) General Health and Longevity Stephen Hawking's weight: mild CR?

Topic ID: 16522 16 March 2018 - 02:18 PM

To sum:

Tim C: deletes 'sexy men photo blog' and similar

Tim C: does NOT delete Khurram's posts

I'll advise more when known.

Another thing, I've identified ~13 topics with unknown deletion reasons (most at the same time - which looks glitchy/indeliberate). Some topics date back to 2015 & 2016.

There is a restore function that gives me just into April to undo:

Days to retain deleted topics and posts: 15

Topics and posts that are deleted are retained in the database, allowing you to restore them ... after how many days would you like these topics and posts removed from the database permanently?"

I will give ~12 hours for a reply just in case there are good reasons for the deletions. I've never used that restore function, but hopefully it works.
