"Sudden adult onset Calorie Restriction shortens the lifespans of mice."

Recommended Posts

Greetings, I'm a new member and have a question. I'm ready to begin this journey, but have a concern about the comment "Sudden adult onset Calorie Restriction shortens the lifespans of mice." posted on this website at : http://www.crsociety.org/resources/getting_started.

I have searched the entire website for information about this, including the forums but did not find anything, so I apologize if this has already been addressed.

How can someone start CR and not have it be sudden? I understand that one should gradually cut their calories, but what does "sudden" mean, and where are the cutoff points for "sudden" and "gradual"? Since the reference for this statement is not given, I cannot read the scientific literature to know the perimeters. Does anyone know which study/studies from which this claim is being made?

I want to start CR, but in the hopes of prolonging life, not shortening it! But how do I do this without knowing the perimeters?

Thank you for your advice!

The quote comes from Dr Roy Walford's book, "Beyond the 120 Diet" (2000) Sudden means to immediately reduce your calories to a CR level. As you stated, you should gradually reduce calories (to control weight loss to no more than a pound a week). More then that is excessive, though the first couple weeks may involve a loss of up to 10 pounds...loss of water weight, fecal bulk, etc. After that slow weight loss. Determine how many calories maintains your current weight and alowly adjust downward.
