68lb right/64 lb left.
was 30kg in late 2021 [practically the same]

I’m in between males and females [I may have low testosterone/DHT signalling which would make sense]

on 2020-11-29, it was 25.5 kg, 58-60lbs at max

God I had measurements earlier I can’t find.

Water filtration creates its own MP contamination.. if you look at the graph, THE MAJORITY OF NPS are not from the bottle, but from the water itself...

Ideally, you'd test RIGHT BEFORE filtration and right after filtration

https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7150600847725383680/

The 2024 recent microplastics papers (above) also show that contamination comes from the REVERSE OSMOSIS FILTER ITSELF (RO filters are made of plastic too), so b/c of this I'll still rely on my pitcher

Do you do water testing of canned beverages? Also do you do nanoplastics testing? What does a microplastics testing report look like? (does it have separate scores for polystyrene?)

Hi again
When you say "canned beverages" are you referring to something like bottled water? Or a non-water product (like a milk or juice)?

We currently do not offer any nanoparticle testing - as there are no commercially avaialbe methods for nanoparticles and nanoplastics (its typically only avaialbe in speciality university and academic reserach labs)

Our microplastics tests does not specifically identify the material of the plastics found. It only does concentration of microplastics (by particle size) and typically the plastic particles assoicated with bottled water and other packaged beverages are so small that are not very well captured by that test - so I just want to be transparent that it may not be a good fit

based on what you are describing/looking for

Is carnosine worth it?https://www.crsociety.org/topic/18704-is-carnosine-worth-it/ I was using carnosine for several years since I read an article showing 20% lifespan extension in mice fed with carnosine. There were also several human studies showing decrease in AGE formation but I think all of them used obese/diabetic individuals. As the supplement is quite expensive (~40$ per month) I am considering if it is worth such money so recently I revised the available studies.
Turned out that the most promising study, the one that showed life extension in mice was using senescence accelerated mice and it improved only average not maximal lifespan:
http://protein.bio.msu.ru/biokhimiya/contents/v65/full/65071018.html
Strangely , I couldn't find any more lifespan studies with this supplement, the one above was done over 20 years ago. Moreover for some reason SENS foundation members never mention it and decided to go with other agents in their anti AGE program. Seems strange that nobody in anti ageing field further tried to explore it and it remained pretty obscure comparing with other supplements like NAD or astaxanthin. Is there some reason for that I am missing?   It seems like a good candidate for ITP study.
Have you heard about more recent studies using carnosine?

How Not To Age: Dr. Michael Gregerhttps://www.crsociety.org/topic/18368-how-not-to-age-dr-michael-greger/ Dr. Greger's video trailer for his new book was released today. I personally am beyond excited for it and have pre-ordered my hardcover copy from Amazon here. The book is currently ranked #2 of all Amazon books in the Diets and Weight-loss category.

Uncover the evidence-based science to slowing the effects of aging, from the New York Times bestselling author of the How Not to Die series

When Dr. Michael Greger, founder of NutritionFacts.org, dove into the top peer-reviewed anti-aging medical research, he realized that diet could regulate every one of the most promising strategies for combating the effects of aging. We don’t need Big Pharma to keep us feeling young―we already have the tools. In How Not to Age, the internationally renowned physician and nutritionist breaks down the science of aging and chronic illness and explains how to help avoid the diseases most commonly encountered in our journeys through life.

Physicians have long treated aging as a malady, but getting older does not have to mean getting sicker. There are eleven pathways for aging in our bodies’ cells and we can disrupt each of them. Processes like autophagy, the upcycling of unusable junk, can be boosted with spermidine, a compound found in tempeh, mushrooms, and wheat germ. Senescent “zombie” cells that spew inflammation and are linked to many age-related diseases may be cleared in part with quercetin-rich foods like onions, apples, and kale. And we can combat effects of aging without breaking the bank. Why spend a small fortune on vitamin C and nicotinamide facial serums when you can make your own for up to 2,000 times cheaper?

Inspired by the dietary and lifestyle patterns of centenarians and residents of “blue zone” regions where people live the longest, Dr. Greger presents simple, accessible, and evidence-based methods to preserve the body functions that keep you feeling youthful, both physically and mentally. Brimming with expertise and actionable takeaways,
How Not to Age lays out practical strategies for achieving ultimate longevity

Healthy Tea Recommendations?https://www.crsociety.org/topic/18029-healthy-tea-recommendations/ I adore coffee. It's delicious, healthy, it keeps me motivated, and distracts the great dragging black dogs of depression.

But I got carried away. Now it's turned against me. Coffee makes me happy for hours, and then horribly anxious for even more hours. So after a long and sad decontamination journey I've finally ramped off. I truly miss it, though, and believe in coffee's magical powers, so I know I'll return back to it again someday.

Meanwhile, I'm transitioning back again to teas and wondered what world's healthiest brands you're drinking nowadays? White tea, green, hibiscus, what do you like, and where do you buy it?

Metformin - yet another u-turn?https://www.crsociety.org/topic/18380-metformin-yet-another-u-turn/ Metformin's claimed effects in healthy (i.e. non-diabetic) humans have certainly been full of twists, turns and reversals. Extends life, cuts down on cancer; no it doesn't and not in non-diabetics. Blunts or eliminates the benefits of exercise, poor effects on vo2max and muscle training.

Latest plot twist: attenuates muscle atrophy (in the immobilized), generally slows the senescence of muscle tissues and keeps those cells young in older people:

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/acel.13936

Stay tuned, I'm sure another 180 is just around the corner.

[IMPORTANT] Favorite low-effort, lower-calorie food items that you can easily get from a store/use as fast food. #DiningGuidehttps://www.crsociety.org/topic/18546-important-favorite-low-effort-lower-calorie-food-items-that-you-can-easily-get-from-a-storeuse-as-fast-food-diningguide/https://www.rapamycin.news/t/what-are-your-favorite-low-er-calorie-low-calorie-per-volume-ratio-or-appetite-suppressing-foods/3625/8 (but I need to repost them here b/c this forum is friendlier to long content, and there are trashy replies)

=======

(I know many of these foods have high sodium content, so add potassium salt to neutralize). Alignment/human power/all other outcomes are instrumentally convergent on making everyone's diets lower-effort *and* healthier, and I've optimized for both 🙂

  • Sodastream water maker for carbonating water (linked version is glass). Carbonated water is way more filling and often fills me up enough when I get cravings. Prefilter water with a decent water filter (maybe SimplyFiltered) to reduce PFAS and other contaminants (and maybe microplastics)
  • almond/macademia milks. They are SO filling. they just make you pee a lot. Make sure to get low-calcium versions… They are often packed in Tetrapak plastic (whose effects/leachability relative to the terrible plastics in bottled water are currently unknown but socially important to investigate - pls ping https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/news/bottled-water-can-contain-hundreds-thousands-nanoplastics). Soy milk exists too, but has more protein than almond/macademia milk (and is 80 calories/serving [640 in one carton], unlike almond milk's 40 calories/serving)
  • pickled vegetables. VERY tasty and can substitute for other cravings. Just beware of the emulsifier polysorbate 80. Has vinegar. The processing can reduce pesticide load. Also, pickled cucumbers can irritate the stomach lining - Podcast: What Is H. Pylori? - YouTube 2. There's an amazon form in glass jars (a bit more expensive)
  • coffee (preferably ground green) in soy/almond/macademia milk prepared via all-steel coffee percolator. Excellent appetite suppressant (along with green tea).
  • Tomatoes and cucumbers (easy to snack on, low bitterness). Tomatoes are really a fruit with a calorie density lower than many vegetables (even cruciferous ones). Greenhouse/Canadian tomatoes have much lower pesticide than Mexican tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes are way cheaper in Europe
  • Parsley (one of only two veggies to decrease Mike Lustgarten's rate of epigenetic aging). Lots of apigenin
  • giardiniera (glass jars available for shipping over amazon)
  • ezekiel bread (flour-free and low-GI - one of the *few* healthy breads. Currently testing on my CGM). 11-14% protein and 8% fiber by weight, which is higher than most beans. Boiled black beans are 5-7% protein *and* fiber by weight, chickpeas are ~8% protein/fiber by weight
  • Nopalitos tender cactus (from La Costena) => in glass containers too! Found in the mission. My only concern is that they’re imported from mexico, and growing standards in mexico are not as good (aka there’s higher chance of contamination, though one would hope that since they’re cacti, they may be grown farther from microplastic/pesticide-contamined areas - though I’m less sure about pesticides b/c Mexico produce has higher contamination)’
  • Miso soup (often cheapest/only affordable option at restaurants too)
  • carrots (super-cheap). Can destroy your teeth if you eat too many raw (and this is an issue when you already eat enough acidic food)
  • Salsa. Best vegetable dip ever (tho add potassium to neutralize the Na). Or I just drink out of the jar. Has vinegar. Black bean salsa can help satiate cravings that salsa alone cannot. Enough salsa can make raw vegetables more palatable. Easy to mass-order off Amazon
  • Seaweed of all forms (Thiel Fellow Reiss Jones has a Seaweed Gang whatsapp groupchat just for bulk purchases of them). Brown (non-tropical) seaweed can serve as SIRT6 activators. More expensive than veggies, but could change (and even despite the expense, they're powerful in small amounts)
  • mustard (very low calorie flavor), also very juicy and substitutes for a lot of other cravings. Dijon is better. You can get dijon shipped via amazon though it has added sugar (idk how much)
  • Strawberries. Calorie-density of a vegetable [151cals/lb], tho they do spike glucose (try to coadminister with 300mg canagliflozin). Very pesticide-heavy if non-organic (target has affordable organic).
  • Strawberry leaves and blueberry leaves (yes, they are edible and healthier than the fruit 🙂 )
  • wild apples (more bitter, before they got bred to be sweet). Also all the fruit before they got mass-bred to be sweet
  • ALL the vegetables (this is obvious and goes without saying, though many are hard to snack on as fast-food, and the value of time only increases as AGI nears - hence why I included everything else). Broccoli, cucumbers, tomatoes => easiest to use as fast food. Everything is easier in an instant pot (or you can put a bunch of water over them and boil them => you’ll hear it when the water boils/pours over and then they’re ready). I prefer electric stoves over gas stoves b/c safer. Most cruciferous vegetables have lower pesticide loads.

  • VEGETABLE SOUP (too bad they’re hard to buy in stores, and costs can easily blow up with volume). Costs don’t blow up with volume in Ivy League dining halls
  • in university dining halls that are all-you-can-eat [all the Ivies, JHU, UMass-Amherst, UMichigan, etc], it’s super-easy to get an abundance of soup and low-calorie vegetables (sauteed in olive oil, though not many are boiled)
  • if you’re friends with some people in CR Society (or a certain Jason A), you can sometimes enjoy their super-specially prepared vegetables (too bad I don’t have the time to prepare them)
  • anything with vinegar (enhances glycemic control, helps one fill full)
  • keto bread (esp unbun). A lot of them have lots of psyllium husk/insoluble fiber. Whole foods has nobagels. ThinSlim foods has some. They have egg protein (which I don't consider a concern given how filling they are). It's unclear if unbun is healthier than bread/beans + acarbose/canagliflozin (which can completely neutralize the glycemic spike). Bread increases Steve Horvath's GrimAge... (I once gave him acarbose tho 🙂 )
  • Jellyfish (their amino acids are mostly collagen) and they have low calorie-density. Also, they don't have brains and cannot suffer. If you pay close attention, jellyfish and unbun keto bread are the only two non-vegan foods on the list
  • Shirataki noodles (they would be a miracle if they weren't always packaged in the most sus of plastic containers)
  • things sweetened with sugar alcohols (tho really, who needs sweeteners?)
  • spices: https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3921/8/4/100/htm - allspice, cloves, anise, chinese 5-spice have both anti-glycative and anti-ROS abilities.

Lower-calorie substitutes for other food (or just super-healthy/high-fiber food)

  • Peaches have low calorie density at 177 cals/lb (+you can use acarbose on). But often have pesticides.
  • Silken tofu has 45 cal/85 grams (much less than regular tofu for some reason)
  • Slimcado. Can substitute for fat/nut cravings
  • Chia seeds are 34% fiber by weight, flaxseeds are 29% fiber by weight. No other food is so high fiber by weight (though vegetables have a lot of non-fiber bulk)
  • POSSIBLY corn bran (lots of insoluble fiber) - they are sold in Honduras. Supposedly lower-calorie than wheat bran (only from one source). I felt knocked out after consuming them => not a good indication of “low-calorie” b/c I know when too many carbs knock me out. Eat with acarbose
  • beans/lentils => combine with acarbose and the blood sugar spike is super-low. Can be used as a primary source of calories. They can knock me out, however.
  • mangoes. More sucrose than any other fruit so you can blunt the glucose spike with acarbose (which is cheaper and more immediately applicable than SGLT2 inhibitors). Still they knock me out if I eat too many.
  • https://www.quora.com/Does-acarbose-work-for-reducing-the-glycemic-index-of-fruit (acarbose-safe fruit). NOTE: acarbose does not work on dragonfruit. Oranges spike my glucose way less than apples (despite lower fiber).

Prickly pear is also 185 calories/lb which is less than pear calories (still higher than strawberry calories, similar to peach calories)

image.png.ec10e8b489ddf38c296aa1d0741ebdf8.png

Olives are normally healthy but they often contain acrylamide due to how they're processed. I have noticed that pasta sauce AND pomi's crushed tomatoes spike my glucose (which could be the same for tomato sauce and salsa)

=======

I sometimes get gourmet fermented vegetables from Cambridge Naturals (fermentation is good, esp fermenting natto). They're not really more expensive than restaurant food, so for all the money I save NOT going to restaurants, I can use it for these. They are still expensive enough that I can't regularly eat them (tho AGI timelines make this expense matter way less and if you invested enough crypto=>AMD/NVIDIA...)

https://cambridgenaturals.storebyweb.com/s/1000-4/b?g=MGP-1000-21&g=MGP-1000-89

tapenades are great dips for veggies (+ultra healthy+often come in glass containers). I ate tomatoes+mushrooms+onions+cauliflower today, and NONE of them did anything to make me feel full. I then dipped mushrooms in tapenade AT LAST and it did it.

Sea moss is a wonderful appetite suppressant

Shirataki/miracle noodles. They are a low-calorie miracle, only that they don’t really get digested (you don’t want to eat too much at once b/c indigestion) and they’re always packaged in the most suspicious sharp plastics ever (I’d buy them in abundance if not for the plastics issue - fortunately I guess I have enough vegetables to distract myself with).

image

THIS is the most common food I’ve been consuming over the past month (mostly because it’s very cheap - the cheapest to order off amazon):

image

[it is HELLA addicting when you add olive oil over it]. Plastics are a concern but amazon prime doesn’t allow for much else (and the plastics don’t seem that shardy like water-bottle plastics - like - not all plastics are equally “evil” and certain plastics just “feel” much worse than others [like pointier microplastics from waterbottles/shirataki seem more likely to insert themselves into cell membranes, and HDPE/PP plastics seem more “benign” than ones made of weirder materials - never mind that you want to avoid them if you still can]).

image
among breads, there is 7 base culture keto bread and ezekiel [tho ezekiel you should take with acarbose]

passionfruit is 11% fiber by weight (but 428 calories/lb)

There are some FOXO variants:

I am taking Prodrome Glia for white matter inflammation issues derived from Lyme Disease. I haven’t found a single thread discussing Dayans work other than this. So please keep the discussion going.

I suspect my issue is that I have several genetic variants that might be contributing:

rs7946 T/T:

PEMT pathway is responsible for the body’s production of phosphatidylcholine, which is part of the phospholipid bilayer making up the membranes surrounding our cells. The PEMT enzyme is key in the body’s ability to create choline. Genetic variants that decrease the function of the enzyme cause greater reliance on choline from dietary sources.

rs10791957:
> - A/C: reduced turnover of methionine to phosphatidylcholine

Plus:

rs18J01133: >- A/G: one copy of **MTHFR C677T** allele, enzyme function decreased by 40%

Haven’t tested my father on prodrome (yet), but for me, I tested on the 2nd percentile for Total PhosphatidylCholine at age 32 and with a healthy diet. After 3 months of taking 10g a day of Sunflower lecithin I only went up of the 12th percentile. So I am taking now PC capsules in addition. Will test again soon and share my results.

my MTHFR variants (only for regulatory variants, this does not contain 1298 A>C (rs1801131)😞

agh for 1298 A>C (rs1801131) I need to grep "rs1801131" which returns no matches. So nebula's pre-provided vcf file does not work... nebula does provide BAM and FASTQ files but these are a bigger hassle and I may do other things before returning to this...

A look at "Longevity Olympics" winning routine: This 55-year-old single mom makes less than $100k per year and is reverse aging without spending millions.https://www.crsociety.org/topic/18468-a-look-at-longevity-olympics-winning-routine-this-55-year-old-single-mom-makes-less-than-100k-per-year-and-is-reverse-aging-without-spending-millions/ https://fortune.com/well/article/reverse-aging-habits-daily-routine-single-mom-budget/amp/

Julie Gibson Clark is aging at 0.665 of a year for every chronological year she lives and ranks no.2 in a global online longevity game.

Clark’s results are more than impressive. In a global online longevity game called the Rejuvenation Olympics, ranking 4,000 people’s pace of aging averages across six months, Clark is in second place. She ranks higher than no.6 Bryan Johnson, the wealthy tech founder who spends $2 million per year on reverse aging, and no. 19 Peter Diamandis, whose venture fund has put $500 million into growing technologies, many of which are aimed at research and development for healthy aging and extending lifespan, according to his website.
Unlike the tech millionaires using extreme anti-aging protocols like spending up to $1,000 an hour to see a rejuvenation doctor, Clark’s secret is somewhat ordinary. After all, she makes less than six figures a year and cannot afford to spend her savings trying to live forever since she will need enough to sustain her into extreme old age. She spends $27 a month on a gym membership and $79 a month on a supplement subscription from NOVOS, the company whose trial she entered and worked with to submit her results to the longevity leaderboard.

“Eventually the wheels will fall off the bus, and I’m like, well, mine aren’t falling off anytime soon,” Clark previously told Fortune. “So I’m going to do everything I can to keep the bus in good order.”

So what’s her daily routine? Turns out, you can do it, too. “This stuff has to just kind of be like brushing your teeth,” Clark says.

A vegetable-rich diet

Clark typically consumes about 16 ounces of vegetables daily, snacking on carrots, radishes, and peppers during the workday. The majority, though, she gets through salads and soups. Eating a diverse array of whole foods, such as a range of vegetables, is associated with a strong gut, which can boost the immune system and keep the body healthy.

Clark also limits the amount of refined sugars and grains she eats, which contain fewer nutrients than complex carbohydrates.

Strength and cardio

When Clark heads to the gym, she does a mix of cardio and strength workouts each week: Two days of upper body workouts with weights, two days of lower body with weights, and one day of strength-training targeting her midsection. She also does about 20 to 30 minutes of cardio four times a week.

On the weekends, Clark hikes, kayaks, plays pickleball, or takes a long walk.

Especially as people age, incorporating strength training into the week can help combat age-related muscle loss. Finding an exercise you enjoy can help you stick with it.

A sauna and a cold shower

At least three times a week, Clark uses the sauna for 20 minutes before taking a cold shower.

Longevity experts swear by cold and hot immersion to stress the body. As longevity expert Dr. Mark Hyman previously told Fortune, “a stress that doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

Heat immersion like a sauna can activate longevity pathways, he says. “You’ll end up increasing heat shock proteins which clean up all damaged proteins and boost your immune system and increase your cardiovascular health,” Hyman says.

A cold shower, similar to the cold plunge, can do more than improve alertness. It can release adrenaline and keep the body resilient—a biological process known as hormesis, which can reduce inflammation.

Metabolomics threadhttps://www.crsociety.org/topic/18271-metabolomics-thread/

Lower choline is associated with more efficient fiber structure (same with higher NAA levels) [at least in ONE study]. I mean it shows that ageotypes are unique to specific people (you need spatial metabolomics) otherwise an elevation in one metabolite could mean many different things [it could mean higher turnover *or* higher degradation *or* inefficient turnover]

Pairwise comparisons (with Sidak corrections) further revealed that cortical spine density was significantly reduced in untreated aged rats compared to the density in untreated young animals (p = 1.694e-6). Comparisons of the two AMPH-treated groups with the untreated groups revealed that the drug increased cortical spine density significantly in aged rats (p = 6.541e-10), resulting in a spine density in aged rats that was similar to the density in the young rats. In contrast, AMPH did not increase spine density in the young rats (Figure 5b).

Details are in the caption following the image
Chronic amphetamine treatment augments dendritic spine density and favors a morphological shift toward mature spines in aged Fischer 344 rats. (a) Representative example of Golgi staining of basal dendrites in layers II/III of the prelimbic cortex (PL) and in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) of control and amphetamine (AMPH)-treated groups. (b, c) Spine density in layer II/III of the PL and in the DG of the hippocampus. Each individual point represents the mean of three randomized dendritic segments from each rat for density analyses (n = 5–6 rats per group). Each animal is represented by a different color. ****p < 0.0001. (d, e) Analysis of shifts in the relative abundance of long thin and mushroom spines (classified as described in Section 2) after AMPH treatment in layer II/III of the PL (d) and in the DG of the hippocampus (e) **p < 0.01 compared with the corresponding vehicle control groups and young versus aged.

Similarly, in the hippocampus (Figure 5c), a mixed model analysis revealed a significant main effect of age [F(1,88.885) = 16.021, p = 1.30e-4], and a significant interaction between age and drug [F(1,88.885) = 25.591, p = 2.25e-6]. As in the cortex, pairwise comparisons (with Sidak corrections) revealed that hippocampal spine density was significantly reduced in untreated aged rats compared to untreated young rats (p = 2.317e-8). Comparisons between the AMPH treatment groups with the untreated control groups revealed that AMPH increased spine density significantly in the aged rats (p = 1.359e-9) but not in the young rats.

Morphological analyses of spines in the prelimbic cortex (Figure 5d) revealed that AMPH treatment induces spine remodeling characterized by a decrease in long thin (immature/transient) spines and an increase in mushroom (stable mature) spines in aged rats. A three-way ANOVA (spine subtype × age × treatment) analyzing the percentage of spines within each experimental group indicated a significant main effect between spine subtype × age interaction [F(1,38) = 8.839; p = 0.0051] and significant main effect between all three factors (subtype × age × drug) [F(1,38) = 35.82; p < 0.0001]. Post hoc comparisons indicated that in comparison with young rats, aged rats displayed a significant decrease in mushroom spines (p = 0.0012) concomitant with an upregulation in long thin immature spines (p = 0.004). These findings are consistent with previous studies demonstrating structural reorganization occurring in normal aging (Dickstein et al., 2007). Importantly, chronic AMPH upregulated the number of mushroom spines in comparison with untreated aged controls (p = 0.0012), a phenomenon that was not observed in the young rats.

Similarly, in the hippocampus (Figure 5e), a three-way ANOVA analyzing spine distribution revealed a significant effect between spine subtype and age [F(1,20) = 5.73; p = 0.0266] and a significant main effect between all three factors [spine subtype × drug × age; F(1,16) = 17.19; p = 0.0008]. Similar to the findings in the prelimbic cortex, post hoc comparisons revealed that untreated aged animals displayed a decrease in mushroom spine density compared to young controls (p = 0.0084) that is rescued by AMPH treatment (p = 0.0012). Together, these data indicate that the unfavorable loss of dendritic mushroom spines associated with normal aging can be improved by AMPH treatment (Figure 5e and Figure S2).

Just curious, anyone have a plan, or preps for global pandemic?https://www.crsociety.org/topic/17742-just-curious-anyone-have-a-plan-or-preps-for-global-pandemic/ Right now this China coronavirus doesn't seem all that threatening considering there are less than 100 confirmed deaths (2000 infections) and the regular seasonal flu kills 250,000 to 500,000 every single year... but I was just curious if anyone has made any special plans for a global pandemic type scenario, seeing as how this group seems to be all about staying alive 😉

confirmed%20cases.jpg?itok=livJObV-

World health organization is saying this thing is about as contagious as the Spanish Flu virus was.   Just in the last 3 days, it went from 20 million quarantined to 40 million, now 56 million.  So far it has about a 3% kill rate (so even if you get it, those odds are pretty good).  There are a lot of disturbing videos coming out of China the last couple days, you can see them on twitter, people collapsing on streets, huge volumes of people at the hospital, caretakers collapsing, bodies in hospitals.

Not really sure how practical it would be to prepare for a global pandemic in general.  I guess you could get a good ventilator/respirator, maybe stockpile a few months food or something.  Anyone actually do that stuff?  I do have a small survival corner of my basement, but probably not adequate, and it was mostly stocked about 15 to 20 years ago.  You know just your basics - guns, ammo,  bows, sealed Mormon food storage (I actually went to one of their prepper centers and picked/packed it myself, fun times,  they are nuts but didn't care that I was an outsider, they were very friendly), canned food, water purifiers, fire starters, one good respirator, dust masks, nitrile gloves.  I don't actually expect to ever use this stuff though.  And the food would only last a couple weeks.

The walnuts thread (they're the weird nut)https://www.crsociety.org/topic/18244-the-walnuts-thread-theyre-the-weird-nut/One source says they're the healthiest nut

https://www.lifeextension.com/magazine/2022/4/walnuts-extend-your-life

But I just ate a bag of walnuts today and noticed the HUGE difference between unexpired nuts and expired nuts. The expired nuts do not taste terrible - you have to compare them side by side to see the difference and it is huge

They are heavy in PUFAs, which makes them unusually prone to oxidation (of all the fatty acids, PUFAs have the highest benefits *and* highest harms)

When you bring walnuts (shelled or in-shell) home from the store, the best place to store them is in your refrigerator or freezer, depending on when you’re going to use them. If you’re going to use the walnuts right away, place them in your refrigerator. If you’ll be storing them for a month or longer, store them in your freezer.

If you buy walnuts in sealed packaging, you can store the walnuts in their original packaging in the refrigerator or freezer. Once you open the bag, transfer the walnuts to an airtight container to maintain freshness and then place them back in the refrigerator or freezer. If you buy bulk walnuts, either in-shell or shelled, place the walnuts in an airtight container for long-term cold storage.

Several nuts are among the dietary plants with the highest content of total antioxidants. Of the tree nuts, walnuts, pecans and chestnuts have the highest contents of antioxidants. Walnuts contain more than 20 mmol antioxidants per 100 g, mostly in the walnut pellicles. Peanuts (a legume) also contribute significantly to dietary intake of antioxidants. These data are in accordance with our present extended analysis of an earlier report on nut intake and death attributed to various diseases in the Iowa Women's Health Study. We observed that the hazard ratio for total death rates showed a U-shaped association with nut/peanut butter consumption. Hazard ratio was 0.89 (CI = 0.81-0.97) and 0.81 (CI = 0.75-0.88) for nut/peanut butter intake once per week and 1-4 times per week, respectively

The quality between walnuts seems to vary A LOT, it's crazy...

How concerned are you with PFAS/ways to reduce/blood testing?https://www.crsociety.org/topic/18705-how-concerned-are-you-with-pfasways-to-reduceblood-testing/PFAS is often in tea bags (this is why I remove the bag before pouring)...

Tejava uses giant tea bags, I might have to externally test it b/c I'm starting to drink a lot of Tejava (testing water is $70).

I'm not as concerned about PFAS as I am with microplastics, and I don't do much takeout, but amounts in tea could be concerning.

Astaxanthin (the best evidence that **SOME** antioxidants can still be pro-longevity)https://www.crsociety.org/topic/18341-astaxanthin-the-best-evidence-that-some-antioxidants-can-still-be-pro-longevity/

constant DNA damage is a fact, and at least knowledge is empowering; thus, we can start doing something about it. Anyway, in 2010, a study looked at healthy 21.5 year old women (on average) that took placebo, 2 mg or 8 mg/day of astaxanthin for 8 weeks. Remarkably, both doses of astaxanthin significantly lowered the rate of DNA breakdown.5 One of the interesting take home messages here is that even people in their twenties are experiencing measurable DNA damage. They are already aging, they just don’t know it.

Seeking more evidence of astaxanthin’s power to combat free radicals, eyeball tissues in diabetic rats were examined for evidence of hyperglycemic induced, oxidative stress damage and its reversibility. Not only do high glucose levels increase the production of free oxygen radicals, it causes the depletion of cellular antioxidant defense capacities. Not unexpectedly, significant damage to the retina and surrounding eye tissues was noted in the control group. By comparison, the addition of astaxanthin to their diet, at a variety of concentrations, was extremely beneficial.

astaxanthin molecule reaches an individual cell, and we’ll get to transport later, it is able to incorporate into both the cell membrane and the mitochondrial membrane. The molecule inserts itself directly into the lipid bilayers, and spans the entire membrane.

Called a transmembrane orientation, this prime location allows the molecule to perform its magic in several subcellular components. As a direct result, astaxanthin is a far more potent free radical scavenger (ROS) than its molecular cousins. It is 200 times that of the other polyphenols, 150x anthocyanin, 75x alpha-lipoic acid, 550x greater than vitamin E, 54x greater than B-Carotene, 6000x greater than Vitamin C, and 800x that of Coenzyme Q.3
